Studying BA Landscape Architecture at BCU has been a transformative experience for Ellie, blending creativity with practical skills and industry connections. From gaining valuable work experience to joining the Dance Society, Ellie has embraced every opportunity to grow both professionally and personally. With supportive tutors, state-of-the-art facilities, and a vibrant city to explore, BCU has provided the perfect environment for her to thrive.
"When I was looking at going to universities and different courses, I thought I wanted to do Fashion Design or Geography, quite different subjects. However, when looking at BCU I came across BA Landscape Architecture which I hadn't heard of before. I knew was the perfect mix of everything I wanted to do in my career, I came to view the university and was happy with what they had to offer - including supportive tutors and great creative facilities.
I grew up in the small town of Princes Risborough in Buckinghamshire and so moving to Birmingham was a new and exciting experience for me that I was not used to, but have enjoyed and appreciated every moment of. Getting over the move away from home was challenging at times, but I think throwing myself at it has expanded me as a person, but also knowing its okay to take a step back when you need to give yourself that time."
I am grateful my course allows so much exploring of what matters to me, and helps me develop what I am most interested in. The course also integrates knowledge needed in the industry and I find it a great mix of the two. I feel the tutors and network around are very supportive which makes for great and inspiring lecturers.
One of my biggest goals over my whole education was to gain some work experience, which I completed two weeks of through BCU. Following that, by creating a good impression and enthusiasm I was offered a job at this practise- Bradley Murphy Design of which I had a full time summer position, transitioning into part time over the course of my final year studying.
I was also nominated by my Level 5 Lead Lecturer to be apart of the Women In Property Student Awards 2024, which was a huge moment for me over my university experience. I presented my work in front of industry professionals in the built environment industry. This expanded my network more than anything else and really put me out there.
One of the biggest enjoyments of my university experience has been being a part of the Dance Society here. I joined in second year becoming part of the contemporary dance competition team which involved going to university competitions such as Loughborough and Northampton. Joining a society creates a whole new infrastructure of people separate from your course, and joining a sports society creates a healthy balance in my timetable, as well as enjoying the sports socials held on Wednesday nights, which are lots of fun!
I have definitely developed in my education and career, but even more importantly to me is the personal development, as I feel I have expanded as a person since coming to university. I am grateful for every opportunity. BCU has definitely shaped me as a person in so many ways- meeting new people and having new experiences here is so important to me now. My mindset has shifted for the better, and I am so much more independent.
