Jessica McEwan

Fashion, Business and Promotion - BA (Hons)

Since starting at Birmingham City University, Jessica has celebrated a number of great achievements. During her first year of study, Jessica successfully landed a placement with George ASDA and won a prize fund of £150 for her sustainable suggestions at the annual SHIFT Fashion conference.

"I was made to very feel welcome during my first week at BCU - the entire class was encouraged to participate in various ice-breaker games which made everyone feel more at ease. I personally found this to be very useful as it reduced the apprehension of starting somewhere new.

Despite initially being unsure about which course to choose, I have celebrated a number of successes in my first year studying BA (Hons) Fashion, Business and Promotion. Firstly, as part of my buying and merchandising module in collaboration with Asda George, I was selected to present my menswear range at their head office, and later offered a two-week placement with them over the Summer!

Secondly, I entered a competition as part of the Fashion Futures Shift Conference, where I spoke about the future of plastic packaging and how the government and industries need to reconsider this. I came second and received a prize of £150!

I believe BCU has enabled me to further my independence as an individual, as well as enhance skills such as time management. My confidence has definitely increased and I am now a lot broader minded in terms of gathering insights and inspiration. I really enjoy the freedom to explore different avenues and the tutors have all been so encouraging and supportive.

Before I graduate, I hope to have a broader understanding of the job roles that umbrella fashion, business and promotion. I plan to further enhance my skill-set and hope to gain some good quality industry experience. By the time I finish university, I would like to be fully equipped and have a solid idea of the direction I am heading in. I am looking forward to what the future holds!"
