Nina Djokic
Musicology - MA
Moving thousands of miles from home was always going to have its challenges, but despite this, Nina made the big decision to join BCU from Canada to complete her MA in Musicology. The experience has made her more confident in her own abilities.
“Starting a postgraduate course was driven by my desire to diversify my career opportunities and expand my area of expertise. I wanted to emerge with fresh ideas and a heightened sense of confidence.
A postgraduate course, particularly in the UK, had always been on my radar. However, it took a couple of years of full-time work after my undergraduate degree to solidify my intentions for a master's degree. This period also helped me muster the courage to make the leap across the pond.
Studying at BCU is an enriching experience. The university has proven a great home to bring all my projects and ideas to life. Every assessment and module is a tailored opportunity to specialise further, which is something I really enjoy.
The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (RBC) experience is unparalleled. There’s a unique magic in being surrounded by musicians with big dreams and walking through halls resonating with music daily. The students are incredibly supportive, and there are plenty of opportunities to participate in music-related events and ensembles.
Time has flown by whilst I’ve been studying, and I feel this is especially so for an international student like myself. I have limited time to complete my course and solidify my path. The pace can be overwhelming with the constant flow of assessments, events, networking, and the vibrant arts and culture scene of Birmingham, but in a way, that’s what makes it fun and challenging.
The RBC professors and staff have been a pillar of support, offering warmth and guidance unconditionally. They have helped me network and introduced me to events that align with my career path, validated my aspirations, and helped me find clarity through my doubts.
Since joining BCU, I’ve learned to trust my instincts. I expected my master's program to make me an expert in my field, but instead, it taught me that I already possess the necessary knowledge. The course provided a platform to prove and refine this expertise.
Postgraduate study for me has differed significantly from undergraduate study. I feel like I am taken more seriously and share a more familiar relationship with staff and professionals. Embracing the role of an academic has been enjoyable.
After completing my studies, I hope to continue my involvement in academia. Teaching is my passion, and I aim to find various spaces to educate and serve the musical community.
To anyone considering postgraduate study, be prepared to confront your doubts and fears and transform them through projects that will bring you closer to your goals. For those interested in MA Musicology, have a clear vision—no dream is too big. The relevance of your program will hinge on the clarity of your career aspirations.
For me, "I AM BCU" symbolises being Brave, Creative, and Unique. It’s about embodying these qualities in every endeavour. My journey at BCU has been transformative, and I hope my experiences can inspire others to pursue their academic and professional dreams with confidence.”
