PGCE Primary Education

Shaquana Burke's shift from dance to education at Birmingham City University shows her determination and passion for teaching, ready to inspire and empower future students.

"With a bachelor's degree in dance, I never imagined I’d become a teacher. People used to tell me all the time that I would make a great teacher. At first, I brushed it off as a passing comment, but as I continued teaching dance, I began to see what they saw. It wasn’t just about the steps or the technique—it was about connecting with my students, inspiring them, and helping them grow. That’s when I realised that teaching wasn’t just a job; it was my passion.

When I decided to pursue a career in education, I began to research different universities. Birmingham City University stood out to me among the rest. Its commitment to excellence in teaching and the warm, welcoming atmosphere on campus immediately drew me in. As a new mother, I knew I needed a supportive environment that would allow me to balance my academic aspirations with the joys of parenthood. BCU provided just that—a place where I could pursue my dreams while nurturing my family.

My journey at BCU so far has been nothing short of transformative. From the moment I stepped onto campus, I felt a sense of belonging. The dedicated lecture and supportive classmates created an environment where I could thrive academically and personally. What I love most about BCU is its emphasis on hands-on learning and real-world experience. Through placements and practical coursework, I've been able to apply what I've learned in the classroom to real-life teaching situations, preparing me for a successful career in education.

Of course, my experience has not gone without its challenges. I struggled with balancing coursework with the demands of motherhood and other responsibilities has been very challenging. There were moments when I doubted whether I could handle it. But with the support of my family, friends, and the BCU community, I persevered. I learned to prioritise my time, stay organized, and lean on others when I needed help. Through determination and resilience, I overcame each obstacle that came my way, emerging stronger and more confident than ever before.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey at BCU was the opportunity to put theory into practice through placements. Working alongside experienced educators in real classroom settings allowed me to witness first-hand the transformative power of teaching. The connections I formed with my students and the joy of seeing them grow and succeed reaffirmed my passion for education.

I'm currently on the verge of completing my studies at Birmingham City University. With my newfound knowledge, skills, and passion for teaching, I'm eagerly preparing to embark on my career as a teacher. Inspired by my experiences at BCU, I'm determined to make a positive impact in the lives of my future students, guiding them towards growth and success. I look forward to applying everything I've learned during my time at BCU to create engaging and enriching learning experiences for my students, shaping the next generation with care, dedication, and enthusiasm.

To me, "I AM BCUrepresents the values of excellence, community, and empowerment that define my experience at BCU."
