Gabriel - Shaping Realities
Gabriel Trinc
Junior Matchmove Artist
BSc (Hons) Film Technology and Visual Effects
Gabriel made the tough decision to move away from his family and friends in Romania to pursue his passion for filmmaking and visual effects. This leap of faith paid off, having worked on blockbusters like Barbie, Wonka and Thor: Love and Thunder early in his career.
“I always wanted to work in the film industry. I had experience working as a camera operator for small productions before applying to university and I instantly knew I wanted to learn more and one day work on big Hollywood productions. I’m from Romania but unfortunately the universities in my home country didn’t offer the type of course I needed to get into the film industry. I took a big risk leaving my country and my family to come to the UK, but it was the best decision I ever made.
Moving to new country was a step out of my comfort zone, but I’m now grateful for the experience. My tutors were always offering me the chance to develop my skills. They talked through different career options, provided industry contacts for me to network with, and allowed me to gain expertise in working with professional equipment. They helped me feel like I’d made the right choice in moving to a new country, as I knew they’d support me in hard times.
The skills I gained at BCU helped me to secure my first role as a VFX artist in the Film Industry. In my second year, I studied tracking techniques, and this is the foundation of my job now in the VFX industry. In my third year, I completed a 3-month placement at a well-known VFX Studio in London, called Cinesite. I was lucky enough to work on huge projects such as Thor: Love and Thunder and the Marvel TV series Moon Knight. In a short time, I learned so much about my dream role and the skills I needed to make it in the industry.
After graduating, I started working full-time at Framestore in London. Early on in my career, I got to work with some incredible teams on amazing projects such as Barbie and Wonka. Seeing my name against these huge Hollywood movies was a dream come true and made me proud of all the things I’d been through to achieve my goal.
My current role is as a Matchmove Artist. I match computer-generated scenes with live-action shots so the two can be convincingly combined. The role combines both technical and creative skills.
I took a big leap of faith moving to the UK to join BCU, but it’s all been worth it. I’ve worked on some of the biggest blockbusters of the last few years, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
