Grace - Capturing Couture

Grace Duval

Content and Product Copywriter at Kurt Geiger

BA (Hons) Fashion Business and Promotion

Grace always wanted to make it big in the fashion business world but sometimes lacked the confidence she needed to work with big brands. Working with companies like New Balance during her course gave her the skills and confidence needed to apply for a role with Kurt Geiger.

“I studied business at college, mostly because I knew it would provide so many future career opportunities, but I hadn’t quite realised just how many avenues there were for business students to take. When choosing my university course, I considered which modules at college excited me. I was really interested in buying, events management and learning about the fashion industry, so Fashion Business and Promotion was an obvious choice for me.

Visiting BCU at an Open Day and Applicant Taster Day cemented it as my first choice university. The collaborative nature of the course and practice-based projects drew me in.

Throughout the course, there were so many opportunities to work with big businesses. In my first year, I designed a 6-piece denim range for George at Asda. My second year was when I really got to focus on marketing within the fashion industry, I developed a campaign for a collaboration between New Balance and Race for Life in conjunction with the GungHo agency.

I used to really lack confidence, even losing sleep over doing presentations in front of a large group. Presenting for and working with big brands forced me out of my comfort zone. My favourite thing about the lecturers at BCU is that they don’t baby you, they see you as an individual capable of making decisions. My tutors were always there to help but never to take over. These practical experiences readied me to enter the fashion industry and helped me figure out what type of role I wanted.

I secured a role at Kurt Geiger about two months before my course finished. I started off in an entry level position working in the studio and then progressed to working with head office as a Content and Product Copywriter. I am the sole product copywriter for the brand, which includes Kurt Geiger, Carvela and Shoeaholics websites and social media accounts. On a daily basis, I write long and short form copy for social media, web and email. The role is fast paced and involves a lot of collaboration, which I love. I have the opportunity to work with teams across the marketing and product departments which has immersed me in the fashion industry.

I was really nervous to join a global company but from day one, everyone has been so friendly and supportive. Sometimes I can lack confidence, but I have to remind myself that my experiences at BCU and my hard work have earned me my role."
