Lulah - Protecting Profit

Lulah Young

Audit Associate at PwC UK

BSc (Hons) Economics

Lulah thrived on BCU’s varied Economics course. After graduation, she embarked on PwC’s Graduate Scheme to continue learning and achieve success in the finance industry.

The flexibility and variety of BCU’s Economics course is what made the course stand out against other universities. I had the opportunity to learn about corporate finance, entrepreneurial finance, global finance and many other aspects of Economics. This was perfect for me as I wasn’t sure where I wanted my career to lead, and BCU allowed me to explore all possibilities.

I also loved the modern feel of BCU and its city centre accommodation. I was moving out of my family home to be at BCU and couldn’t wait to be in the middle of a vibrant city. Moving away from home gave me the chance to grow and meet new people from different backgrounds. This experience prepared me to work for an international company like PwC.

After university, I wanted to get into the world of work, so I gained a position as an assistant in a software development firm. I quickly realised the role wasn’t for me. I went from learning every day at BCU to feeling like I wasn’t developing new knowledge or using my economics expertise. I felt undervalued in my role and began to miss being at BCU – a place where my input was always listened to, and I was always pushed to be my best self.

After 6 months in this role, I applied to the Graduate Scheme at PwC UK. I was determined to get back to a high-powered environment where I could work hard and progress. Graduate schemes can be very competitive, with a long application process but I think the breadth of knowledge I’d developed at university gave me everything I needed to secure the role.

As my position is part of a Graduate Scheme, there are still a lot of learning elements similar to university. PwC give me study leave time so I can prepare for exams and constantly develop my knowledge. In just one year, I’ve been able to pass my CAEW ACA which makes me a qualified accountant! Plus, I have already been promoted after a successful appraisal period. I’m grateful to work in a company that constantly gives me opportunities and makes me feel seen and valued.

I’ve achieved so much in my current role, and I can see my progression every day. BCU taught me to always strive for success and to accept nothing less.
