BSc Accounting and Finance
The supportive and business-focused environment at BCU has helped Nathan turn his love for maths into a successful career in the a ccounting and f inance industry.
“I always wanted to go to university to study accounting. Money is a fascinating subject, so accounting and finance was a clear choice for me. I initially looked at BCU because I wanted to move away from home in Coventry without being too far away.
I went to BCU's Open Day and loved it straight away. Talking to the lecturers and current students excited me. Their friendliness was hugely important as I wanted a supportive, encouraging environment at university. I didn't like school and really struggled in my maths A Level - even though I loved the subject - because my teachers doubted my abilities.
The staff at BCU were the opposite of my A Level teachers. They were open, encouraging and gave me confidence in my abilities. I still found some mathematical aspects challenging at BCU, but the supportive environment meant I was never alone in my struggles.
One of the best parts of the Accounting and Finance course was the group projects I participated in. Working as a group brought me out of my comfort zone and solidified lasting friendships with people on my course. BCU's projects also simulate real business environments. In one of my favourite projects, we prepared and presented in a mock board meeting. These opportunities improved my professionalism and helped me know what to expect in the world of accounting and finance.
After graduation, I joined Collins Aerospace and now work as a Management Accountant. I focus on general ledger accounting and site support. I love my role and the opportunities it offers. I get to travel around the UK and Ireland, working with teams to improve their financial systems. One of the best places I've been to so far is Shannon in Ireland. I loved it there and probably would have never visited otherwise!
Without the encouragement and support I received at BCU, I don't think I'd be where I am today and taking on these responsibilities. Networking with a large number of people across the company requires a lot of confidence in myself and my abilities. Before university, I don't think I would have been able to do it, which just shows how far I've come.
I can't wait to progress in my role. Collins Aerospace is supporting me in completing my CIMA qualification which will help me progress.
I'm so grateful for BCU for helping me realise my ability and providing a supportive community for me to grow into the professional I am today.”
