Starting your Master's degree in January

Starting your postgraduate degree in January is a great way to start the new year. Many students start their courses in September, but starting in January gives you all the same benefits - in fact, it has a lot of perks!

Made a New Year's resolution to learn something new or advance your career prospects? A postgraduate degree is the perfect way to do both. It's a resolution that pays too, as someone with a Master's degree or PhD earns £5,000 more per year, or £200,000 over a 40-year working life, than someone with just a degree (Graduate Labour Market Statistics 2023, Department for Education).

What are the benefits of starting a postgraduate course in January?

1. Postgraduate loans are still available.

Government-backed loans of up to £12,471 are available to UK, Irish and eligible EU nationals studying postgraduate Master’s courses in any subject area.

2. You can enjoy a break over Christmas before the hard work starts in January.

In the New Year, you'll be ready for a fresh start! Plus, you'll still get Easter and summer breaks like other students.

3. You don't have to wait to kick-start your career

The sooner you start your postgraduate course, the sooner you'll graduate. You may be studying a Master's to gain accreditation and industry links to give you a head start when getting a graduate job. Starting as soon as possible means you don't have to wait to pursue your dream job.

You'll still be able to participate in a placement if it's a part of your course and get involved in the same exciting work-based projects as those starting the course in September.
