Computer and Data Science student Lavanya Aggarwal has completed her placement with Jaguar Land Rover. Lavanya spoke to us about how the opportunity taught her skills and experiences that will be beneficial for her further studies and future employment.
What have you learned from your placement?
I’ve learned so much from this placement that goes beyond technical skills. One big takeaway has been learning how to balance different responsibilities while making time for my own growth. Juggling my main project work with my involvement in networks like Women in Engineering and DRIVEN has taught me how important it is to manage my time and communicate effectively. Working with such a diverse team has also been a great lesson in collaboration and adaptability skills I know I’ll carry with me wherever I go.
How has your course helped you with your placement?
My Computer and Data Science course (now Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence) has been incredibly helpful during my placement, not only for the technical foundation it provided but also for the extra resources and support. At one point, I needed to learn an advanced topic specifically for work, and after reaching out to my professor, she gave me access to a master’s level module on Moodle (learning management system), which made a huge difference. Beyond the coursework, the program offered experiences like hackathons, bootcamps, and the Innovation Fest, where we collaborated on projects and met industry professionals. These experiences built my teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability skills. All of which have been essential in my placement.

Do you have any standout memories from your placement?
When I first started, it felt a bit overwhelming. There was so much to learn, and I wanted to get up to speed with my team quickly. One of my standout memories is when I completed my first big project on knowledge graphs. It was challenging, but seeing it come together was incredibly rewarding. That moment felt like a turning point, I felt like I’d really found my footing and was contributing something meaningful. It gave me the confidence to dive into even bigger projects with a lot more excitement.
What are your career aspirations?
I’m aiming to build a career as a data scientist or software engineer, creating innovative, data-driven solutions that make a difference. I love working with technology, but I’m also drawn to the idea of using it in ways that have a positive social impact. Eventually, I’d like to lead projects that encourage diversity and inclusivity in tech and hopefully mentor others who are starting out in the field. My ideal career path is one where I can keep learning, growing, and contributing to a cause I believe in.
What made you apply for the Computer and Data Science course
I’ve always been passionate about problem-solving, and this course felt like the perfect fit. It offers a mix of computer science fundamentals and data science, which were both areas I wanted to explore deeply. I knew this program would equip me with the skills I needed to make a meaningful impact, and so far, it’s lived up to that expectation. Plus, I love how relevant it feels to today’s tech-driven world; every class and project feels connected to something I could actually apply in my career.
Do you have any advice for someone starting a placement?
Starting a placement can feel overwhelming, and I completely understand that. My advice is to stay persistent and keep pushing yourself. You might be surprised by what you can achieve! Don’t hesitate to ask questions; sometimes the answers can provide just the insight you need. Also, get involved in different activities and make connections with others. Remember, you’re only there for a year, so take full advantage of the experience and have fun along the way.
