Nursing students visit Lourdes

Pushpjit Singh, a third year Nursing student at Birmingham City University, reflects on his time studying in Lourdes with a group of fellow students.

As a third-year nursing student, my journey in nursing has been marked by a profound dedication to learning and a passion for compassionate care. My studies have provided me with a solid foundation in nursing theory and practice, while hands-on experiences have allowed me to apply these principles in real-world settings. This internship at Lourdes has been a pinnacle of my nursing education, offering me a unique and profoundly enriching opportunity to assist pilgrims as part of a collaborative care team, consisting of a doctor, nurses, carers, and hospitaliers. This experience imparted invaluable insights into the dynamics of interdisciplinary care in a setting dedicated to holistic and compassionate patient care.

Initial Impressions

Upon my arrival at Lourdes, I was immediately struck by the atmosphere of compassion and devotion that permeated the place. The warm welcome from the hospitaliers and the care team set a positive and supportive tone for our work with the pilgrims. Their dedication and collaborative spirit were palpable, creating an environment conducive to effective and empathetic patient care.

Comprehensive care approach

Our primary task was to deliver comprehensive care to pilgrims, many of whom were dealing with chronic illnesses or disabilities. The care team, composed of a doctor, nurses, and carers, each brought their expertise to ensure a holistic approach to patient care. Observing the seamless integration of various roles was particularly inspiring, highlighting the crucial importance of teamwork in delivering effective healthcare.

Daily routines and responsibilities

Each day began with a briefing where the care team discussed the needs of the pilgrims we would be assisting. My responsibilities included assisting with mobility, helping with daily hygiene, administering medications under supervision, and providing companionship. Working alongside experienced nurses and the doctor, I learned the importance of attention to detail and the value of empathetic patient interaction. These daily routines underscored the significance of meticulous care and compassionate engagement with patients.

Interdisciplinary collaboration

The collaborative aspect of our work was especially enlightening. I observed how the doctor, nurses, and carers shared information and coordinated care plans to address the individual needs of each pilgrim. This interdisciplinary approach ensured that physical, emotional, and spiritual needs were met. Regular team meetings facilitated dynamic problem-solving and reinforced the importance of communication in healthcare. The synergy within the team was a testament to the power of collaborative practice.

Emotional and spiritual support

Providing emotional and spiritual support was a significant part of our role. Many pilgrims came to Lourdes seeking not just physical healing but also spiritual solace. We assisted them in participating in religious ceremonies and offered a listening ear to their stories and concerns. The compassion and dedication displayed by the hospitaliers were particularly moving and taught me the profound impact of holistic care. This aspect of the internship highlighted the necessity of addressing the multifaceted needs of patients.

Reflective practice

Throughout the internship, I kept a reflective journal, noting my observations, experiences, and personal growth. This practice helped me process the emotional and professional aspects of my work and identify areas for improvement. Reflecting on the collaborative care environment at Lourdes reinforced my understanding of the value of teamwork and a holistic approach to patient care.

Personal reflections

Observing and participating in the care of pilgrims at Lourdes had a profound impact on my understanding of holistic and interdisciplinary care. I was particularly struck by the dedication and compassion of the entire care team. This experience underscored the importance of empathy, communication, and collaboration in delivering comprehensive patient care.

As a student nurse, I gained invaluable experience working within an interdisciplinary team and providing care that addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients.
