Law Clinic

At BCU we are firmly committed to providing excellent opportunities for students to undertake practical work experience to enhance legal skills and their employability with the added benefit of making a real contribution to the Birmingham community. BCU has an on-campus Law Clinic where you can work under supervision on real legal problems.

Enhancing your employability skills with our in-house Law Clinic

Students can become involved with the Law Clinic by taking one of the assessed modules as part of their degree, or by volunteering for one of the Law Clinic’s many other projects.

We have partnerships with the Central England/Birmingham Law Centre Central England Law Centre (centralenglandlc.org.uk) which gives students access to work areas including:

  • Housing
  • Welfare Benefits
  • Immigration
  • Employment

We also have a well-established Family Law Clinic. We have working arrangements with many individual Solicitors and Barristers where you can get involved with Family cases including divorce and private law children cases.

In addition, you can work with national charity Support Through Court, helping litigants in person through the civil court process.

Every year, the Crown Prosecution Service offers online work experience to up to 40 BCU students and there are shadowing opportunities available with Judges and Barristers.

Networking and Social Activities

BCU law students receive free membership of the Birmingham Law Society and access to all their networking opportunities.

As well as the very wide range of practice-based opportunities which you will be able to access, you will be able to get involved in other extracurricular activities such as the Birmingham Legal Walk, the Great Legal Quiz and the LawWorks Student Fundraising Challenge.

Law Clinic Success

The BCU Law Clinic was shortlisted for the 'Pro-Bono award' at the Birmingham Law Society Awards 2024.
