Sociology and Criminology

The discipline of Sociology helps us to make sense of the world and our place within it. Studying Sociology at Birmingham City University will equip you with the theoretical and methodological tools for interrogating social norms and societal transformations. You will gain an understanding of the complex social, political, economic and historical contexts that form your everyday routines.

Our students and academics work together across disciplines to develop insights into society. For us, the big picture is everything. Our teaching and learning are intertwined with research, constantly connecting with communities to see what works. We are proudly rooted in a vibrant, diverse and transformed city but we never shy away from the people and the professionals living and working on the margins of society.

We apply our research in real world settings nationally and internationally, working with communities, prisons, hospitals, schools and the police to understand, and influence, social change. We encourage our students to adapt their academic focus as their expertise develops, working across disciplines to explore – and critically analyse – the constantly changing world around them.
