Why should you consider applying to study at the School of Social Sciences?
You've probably already heard about our practice based learning, our unique relationship with the city we're in, and our newly upgraded facilities, but what do our students think are the selling points for their courses?
So we asked Natalie, a final year Black Studies student, to give us three reasons why she chose to join the School of Social Sciences.
Europe’s first Black Studies course
The Black studies course is a phenomenal and exciting way of getting into an untapped area of research and, if you would like to become a pioneer in social sciences, this is the course for you.
I had been looking for a degree to study that would give me an edge to help influence social change, whether that be within my immediate circle or on a larger scale. So far, the learning and engagement has been amazing; the opportunities appear to be endless and I find it hard to have to say ‘no’.
Countless opportunities
The opportunities that have been made available to me so far include: TV appearances, vlogs, book signing invites, special guest speakers from abroad, and trips such as to the Black Archive in Library of Birmingham. I have also been involved with many BCU events that have allowed me to show what Black Studies is and how it fits in to the curriculum, complementing other courses.
We do a lot of community engagement on the course, which has included an evening meal to complement a BCU event, further promoting the cause of the Black Studies degree. This has been met with open arms and we are looking forward to future events planned so far - the diary is filling up!
Interactive activities
Seminars are when we really get to unpick the subject matter, and discuss and debate our differing opinions in a safe space where we all have the opportunity to express our individual views without judgement. So far the modules have all been coursework based; such as an essay or a presentation.
I have recently completed a week of voluntary work during international activities week and enjoyed it very much. Being able to support the international students on their arrival to the UK gave me an insight into how valued a UK qualification is from a global perspective. This opportunity also enabled me to complete my Graduate+ award, providing me with the soft skills needed to go into my chosen career as a Researcher.
Birmingham as a city is growing, with developments all around such as the neighbouring HS2. For me, I love the MailBox and everything it has to offer; whether you like a cheeky Nando’s or the more upmarket Marco Pierre White’s – you’ll find what you’re looking for!
Good luck with your application and hope to see you see next year!
