Research objectives
The project addresses the recent increase in marine dumping across the south-east of England. Defined as the disposal of garbage, sewage, and other waste and debris into our oceans, marine dumping is an increasing concern in the UK from both environmental and tourism perspectives.
Working with a coastal council and their stakeholders, the project analyses the complex relationships between the various user groups and authorities involved in waste, infrastructure management, and marine dumping. This project uses the innovative scenario analysis approach, allowing proposed strategies to be stress tested and provide early warnings if things are not going according to plan.
Method
There is a critical gap in pedagogic research and adaptation for sustainability teaching practice. Our stakeholder-oriented approach combines scenario analysis's intuitive logic with design thinking in user experience to provide a holistic understanding of environmental problems.
Such practice can inspire sustainability curriculum within business schools in the UK. Learning materials used for this delivery and new materials from reflection at the post-delivery stage will add critical resources to the sustainability curriculum. Main Findings
The project demonstrated that scenario planning-based pedagogic practice can deliver experiential learning for a sustainability-oriented curriculum in post graduate business and management courses. The findings inspired pedagogic development at BCU and collaborative institutions. The findings were also presented at the PRME Conference 2023 at Aston University.
