Jewellery facilities

Located in the historic Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham, our Jewellery courses have access to unique industry standard equipment and are based across Vittoria Street, St Paul's Square and Assay Office campuses.

Workshop spaces

The Jewellery workshops are set up in the same way as those used by practitioners in the jewellery and related products industries. All of the jewellery courses have access to workshop spaces for all of the timetabled practical sessions, the workshop are also available for students to use in their own managed time for self-directed studies and outside taught time; first thing in the morning and later in the afternoons to enable time to practice essential skills and learn and explore processes that have been shown. 

Horology studios

The horology spaces are equipped with essential and state-of-the-art equipment for repair, restoration and construction of watches, clocks and mechanical equipment. This includes a clean space to develop professional repair and servicing skills, a machine area for construction of clock parts and facilities to develop design, construction and manufacture.

Processing room

Basement workshop

The basement workshop has a range of facilities that includes areas for silversmithing, mold making and casting, plating and electroforming, machine engraving, laser cutting, laser welding, machine work including lathes and mills, and is really well supported by our talented technical team. There is also a store where equipment and tools can be signed out on loan, or materials can be bought.

Tech hub

The state-of-the-art Technical Hub helps develop digital three dimensional and two dimensional design software skills, specialist staff support computer aided design drawing, scanning three dimensional items into software for further development, and printing in a variety of materials for prototyping, casting or adding to other made elements. The Technical Hub is also an external facing facility where the technical staff work on a huge array of projects such as research project with the Staffordshire Hoard, a research project with Baskerville punches and even the dragons for Harry Potter movies.

St Paul's Square

A few minutes away from our main Vittoria Street site we have a building that houses a dedicated subject specific library and computer suites, as well as seminar rooms and study rooms for students to use. Our Masters and PhD students have a base room in the spaces to allow them a place for quieter and cleaner work. There is also a small exhibition space that is utilised by students, courses and external parties to showcase ongoing and current items for display. 

Assay Office

A few minutes away from our main Vittoria Street site we have space in the Assay Office, this is home to our Gemmology courses and has well equipped rooms that are specifically used in industry for analysing and studying gems, stones and jewellery.
