In 2000 Cathy joined Birmingham City University when it was known as University of Central England (UCE) following a career working at local Trusts. Cathy qualified at Good Hope Hospital and worked on a general medical ward before moving to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital or University Hospital Birmingham (UHB) as it is known now. Her first job there was on a medical ward specialising in endocrinology and after a few years she made the move to work on a busy surgical gastro intestinal ward. The main and most enjoyable part of her career was spent there caring for patients from all over the country who had severe inflammatory bowel disease (Crohns and Ulcerative colitis), bowel and cervical cancer and pelvic floor damage due to childbirth.

Working as a Ward Sister, Cathy then moved as Ward Manager to a ‘Private Ward’ within the NHS which meant caring for patients from a wide range of specialties: liver, oncology, neuro, cardiac. After managing a ward move from the original hospital to a new oncology building, introducing student nurse placements and opening a chemotherapy bay within the ward Cathy moved to UCE to work closer with students.

At BCU Cathy has mainly taught clinical skills to pre and post registration students, has been involved with the management / transition module over the years and has experience of Programme Director for the Return to Practice programme.

Apart from having a great involvement in teaching clinical skills Cathy is very interested in using OSCEs to assess students and has been responsible with other members of staff for introducing the OSCE as a form of assessment in the first year, which led to OSCEs being used in subsequent years of the programme.

When Cathy is not teaching or carrying out her personal tutor role she is involved in various projects listed below.
