Sport and Life Sciences facilities
Explore the facilities used by Sport and Life Sciences students, including those at the world-class Alexander Stadium.
Alexander Stadium
Sports Therapy Clinic
We have two Sports Therapy classrooms, as well as clinic spaces. The classrooms are set up with several therapy stations, each with a treatment couch, running the length of the room. This is where we teach practical sessions, with students working together to build their skills. Our students also run a Sports Therapy Clinic for staff and students, where they are able to apply the skills they have learnt.
The Altitude Centre
This self-contained unit is housed in one of our Physiology Labs. Conditions in the unit such as temperature and air flow can be controlled to allow you to monitor how changes in environment can affect sporting performance.
DEXA Scanner
A DEXA scanner is used to measure bone density, as well as other aspects of body composition which can be helpful when planning an athlete's training regime.
Anti-gravity treadmill
The anti-gravity treadmill inflates from the waist down, giving users a weightless feeling as they work or run on the treadmill. It is used for rehabilitation, so that athletes can gradually increase weight bearing as they recover from injury.
Biomechanics lab
Our biomechanics laboratory features pressure plates in the floor and cameras mounted at the side. Sensors linked to a computer are used to record motion, evaluate people’s movements and analyse gait.
Microbiology Laboratory
The lab is equipped with modern equipment for teaching the molecular biology techniques that underpin modern clinical and research labs such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) machines and a variety of cell-analysis and cell-culture tools. The department also has DNA sequencing equipment.
