Television students from the School of Media have completed their albert carbon calculator training, a pioneering new course run by the BAFTA albert education partnership.
Continuing the School’s consistent focus on ensuring that all graduates are industry-ready, a group of 25 Birmingham City University students received the award, which gives students industry-level education in sustainable television and film production. We caught up with Lecturer in Professional Academic Development, Hilary Weston Jones, who ran the training.
“Last year I attended a two-day training course ran by BAFTA, which qualifies me to teach our students how to operate the albert calculator. This is an extremely important device used by all industry leaders in television and film, including BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Netflix and Amazon - you will often see the logo on a programme’s end credits.
The albert calculator is used to monitor the carbon footprint of productions and to help companies work to improve the sustainability of a project during production. Naturally, the carbon footprint in television and film production is incredibly high, so it’s fantastic to have had the opportunity to teach our aspiring TV professionals not only about the importance of sustainable production, but also how to achieve it.
In February I completed a one-day training session with a group of third-year media students who are all interested in television careers. During the day, we discussed a range of sustainable issues facing television production and I introduced them to the albert calculator. They then had to complete a multiple-choice test, a practical test using the calculator and submit a short written piece of work.
Beyond the one-day training, the students were then able to use the albert calculator in their production projects and their names listed on the BAFTA website as the class of 2020! We’re delighted for the students involved and the future students that will benefit from this training. Being able to operate the albert calculator, as well as having an understanding of the environmental impact of production, is a huge asset for graduates to have on their CV and something that employer's value highly.”
