This Masters (MSc) Transforming and Leading Health Care is designed as a multidisciplinary programme for professionals and managers leading across both health and can be accessed as a purely on line course or as blended delivery.
What's covered in this course?
As health care provision becomes increasingly complex, with greater demand for services and more people with multiple long term conditions plus the shortages of skilled professionals, there is a growing importance on how health care components (workforce/politics/economics/ accreditation) need to improve and transform. Most health systems globally are under sustained financial constraint and rising consumer expectation.
The need to redesign systems is becoming increasingly important. A crucial part of this for health care leaders includes how to manage yourself, and others, and how to use these skills as the basis for continually managing challenges and improvements in health care systems. Leading and managing health services can seem increasingly challenging in a rapidly changing and multicomplex environment, which attracts continual media interest and attention. It is underpinned by a plethora of legislation, guidance and governance which can often leave professionals both bewildered and overwhelmed as inspections and demands of services and organisations continues to increase.
The overall aim of this programme is for you to continue to develop yourself and your leadership and management skills, by understanding and reflect on how people and team’s behaviours and this affects organisations development and ability to improve. The program then explores global health lessons and the relevance to your everyday practice. The programme will develop your research and leadership skills to enhance your critical thinking in both areas.

All students must be working in an appropriate environment in order to fully engage with the chosen modules. Relevant Bachelor’s degree or equivalent or a 60 credit Level 6 award in an appropriate subject area. Or A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a relevant healthcare area and evidence of successfully completed Level 6 study within the preceding 2 years. Or A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a relevant healthcare area and submit a 2000-3000 discursive essay. This will be marked at Level 6 and will need to meet the pass mark of 40% in order for an offer to be made. The essay title and further information will be sent to eligible students on application. |

This module is part of the MSc Transforming and Leading Health Care and critically examines the challenges and issues which effect health and social care leaders globally. As the world gets smaller, the problems that many health care sectors face are remarkably similar: finances, demand, technology, skilled professionals and public health. However, the responses and the innovation in different countries is still rarely shared and considered. This module will review the similarities and the difference in approach and consider how practice and polices from different countries can be considered and potentially incorporated into our thinking locally using your current and previous employment experience.

This Module is part of the MSc Transforming and Leading Health Care and explores creativity, innovation and service improvement and the application of these areas to the quality and safety of patient care. The module is designed to give you the experience of understanding reviewing and applying theories of innovation, improvement and change into practice and healthcare design. Assignments and seminars will apply learning in practical situations, using your current and previous employment experience.

This module is part of the MSc Transforming and Leading Health Care and aims to facilitate advancing of your self-learning and self-understanding. It will give you insight into your personal and professional strengths, your limitations, your leadership, communication skills and work styles, and how these affect your behaviours including how you learn and your personal resilience. It incorporates psychometric tools and instruments Understanding personality and effectively reading the behaviour of other people is not a hit and miss process but a skill which can be learned and then applied into every aspect of work and life. It is a core skill that will influence your professional working life.

This module explicitly addresses students’ personal and/or professional development with a view to enhancing competence for service improvement in a rapidly changing health and healthcare environment. Through a flexible provision, students are inspired to reflect critically upon their individual learning needs as well as their organisations’ practices, to appraise and apply concepts from the literature on leadership, to issues of relevance for their role, organisation and overall programme of study.

This module specifically addresses the broader programme aims related to “pursuing excellence” and “practice-led, knowledge applied” through a flexible provision that encourages students to develop their research ideas, enabling those on various Health MSc programmes to satisfy their individual learning needs, whilst contributing to their area of study.

In-line with the Professional Practice framework philosophy this module is a level 7 optional module, situated within a flexible pathway that aims to meet the specific academic needs of individual practitioners. A blended learning approach is taken in accord with the university’s learning and teaching strategy and the programme’s philosophy and aims. The module aims to provide you with the opportunity to critically reflect on and evaluate learning which has occurred through prior experience.

This triple module forms the final bridge between the award of a Postgraduate Diploma and a Health MSc related to a named award. It provides the student with the opportunity to complete a piece of work around a chosen topic in order to demonstrate competence in the planning, execution, analysis and evaluation of a Research Project, a Systematic Review or Project Management. It involves 600 hours of study. The focus is on facilitating the student's independent, critical study in their academic discipline or area of professional practice. It will also serve those who wish to embark on Doctoral studies in the future.

Our Facilities
Our Nursing and Midwifery courses are based at our City South campus in leafy Edgbaston.
We’ve spent £41million expanding our facilities at City South. These facilities offer hands-on practical experience, replicating the spaces you will come across in professional practice.
In a sector where new techniques are constantly being discovered, we work hard to ensure that you learn using the most up-to-date equipment available. Alongside physical spaces such as a mock operating theatre and wards, we also make use of online and virtual technology, such as our virtual ward and virtual case creator.

Centre for Skills and Simulation
The Centre for Skills and Simulation offers a range of different spaces which replicate situations that you will encounter in practice. These include hospital wards, an operating theatre and a home environment room.
Our mock wards enable you to get a feel of what a ward is really like before you head out for your first placement. The hospital wards can be adapted from low care to high dependency care environment with the necessary monitoring equipment.
The home environment room is the perfect space for teaching communications skills and allows us to simulate a community setting for our students. It is particularly useful for mental health nurses, learning disability nurses and midwives.
Simulation Manikins
We have several Simulation men (SIM men) and simulation babies (SIM babies) which are anatomically correct manikins used for teaching specific techniques such as advanced adult and paediatric life support skills, acute and high dependency clinical skills, first aid and communication skills. The manikins contain software which replicates real symptoms, and can manipulate indicators such as blood pressure, pulse and heart rate for extra realism. SIM man can even ‘talk’ to the students as they are treating him, to add another dimension to learning.
Computer Facilities
The Seacole building has two open-access IT Suites which offer PCs, printers, photocopiers and scanners. There is also an IT Helpdesk for quick and easy help with your computing or internet issues.
Our PCs utilise the latest Intel i5 core technology, all with:
- Fast (unrestricted) internet connectivity
- Ability to save files to USB, DVD & CD
- Microsoft Office software
- Research and statistical software
- Storage space which can be accessed from any PC across the University and from home
Our PCs are also designed to support students who may have difficulties with reading and writing, featuring specialised software with zooming/magnification and screen reading capabilities, which may also be customised for individual student needs.
In addition to desktop PCs, we also offer a laptop loan facility, allowing students to borrow a laptop for up to six hours while on campus.
