Dr Samuel Salia is an Associate Professor of Finance at Birmingham City University (UK) where he currently leads research and teaches finance. He holds a PhD in Finance from Birmingham City University. He is a member of the UK Institute of Consulting and has consulted for international organisations including the African Union and GIZ. Before joining BCU, Samuel was a Senior Lecturer in Finance and Faculty Head of Doctoral Training (Business and Law) at De Montfort University.

Prior to this, he was a Lecturer in International Finance and Programme Director for MSc International Banking and Finance at the University of Wolverhampton. He has worked as a Management Consultant with the Ghana Ministry of Employment (MDPI), Managing Director of SAS Capital Money Lending Limited and has also held academic appointments abroad.

He has had over eleven years of banking and consultancy experience in the SME sector, specialising in entrepreneurial finance. The findings of Samuel’s research have influenced the practice of ethnic minority businesses in the UK, financial institutions and the policy of regional bodies in Africa. For example, he recently worked on a BAL HEIF-funded project that provided training and support to Afro-Caribbean-owned businesses in the Midlands (UK) in response to COVID-19 challenges. He has also worked on projects such as evaluating the impact of services of Opportunity International Savings and Loans-Ghana; and Village Savings and Loans Associations. As a Technical Advisor, he developed a policy booklet for the African Heads of State and Governments on the AU 2021 theme of the year. He has served as a keynote speaker at national and international conferences.

His focus has recently been on exploring issues of diaspora (migrant) remittance, FinTech and investment in developing countries. Samuel has published extensively on issues relating to access to finance, green finance, SME innovation and entrepreneurial training. His work has been published in the International Journal of Finance and Economics (ABS ranking 3*), International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour and Research (ABS ranking 3*), IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management (ABS ranking 3*) Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development (ABS ranking 2*) among others.

Samuel has examined and supervised PhD students, and on the strength of his research, he has received research funding totalling £26,000. He has served as a reviewer for highly ranked academic journals including the International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour and Research, and the Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development among others.
