This course is specifically intended for serving or returning secondary school teachers with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) who intend to teach mathematics in secondary schools. It will enable you to teach mathematics to 11 to 19-year-olds with enthusiasm and confidence, improving both your subject knowledge and pedagogical skills.

Following acceptance on-to the course, you will complete a detailed assessment of your subject knowledge and expertise in mathematics, ICT and pedagogy, which will allow the course to be tailored to your specific needs.

You will have your own Individual Development Plan (IDP) which will be monitored formatively during regular tutorials throughout the course.

Course Details

Delivery will be through a series of taught sessions over the course of the six months, either as whole days or twilights which will take place either at the University’s City North Campus or at your own school, dependant on your individual needs.

Entry Requirements

Who Can Apply?

Participants will be drawn from secondary-age schools and will have some mathematical knowledge gained either through their own academic background, teaching their main subject or from other experience. You should have completed your NQT year and have been teaching some mathematics for at least one year.

Places for this programme will be allocated using the following order of priority:

  1. Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) holders currently employed in a school as a teacher, who have not been trained in mathematics.
  2. QTS holders intending to return to teaching who either do not have an Initial Teacher Training (ITT) specialism, or who wish to convert to a mathematics specialism. Those eligible for conversion will have experience of teaching a related subject or have a degree qualification which has a significant element of mathematics.
  3. QTS holders with an ITT specialism in mathematics who intend to return to teaching after an extended period (usually more than three years) and wish to enhance their existing mathematical knowledge.
