Staff and students at Birmingham City University’s School of Jewellery are celebrating after winning 11 awards at a national craft and design competition.
The annual Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council Awards promote the pursuit of excellence in craftsmanship and design in silversmithing, goldsmithing, jewellery and the allied crafts across the United Kingdom.
Birmingham City University’s School of Jewellery received the prestigious College Trophy for the second year running, which is bestowed upon the institution with the most awarded entrants.
Jeremy Hobbins, Deputy Head of the School of Jewellery, said: “I was absolutely delighted to accept the College Trophy on behalf of the staff and students at the School of Jewellery.
“It is hugely rewarding to have the excellence and distinctiveness of the education we offer recognised by the industry elite, and for the second year running. There was some really excellent competition and it is a matter of extreme pride that our students clearly hold their own amongst the professionals of the industry.”
Winners at the ceremony hosted in London on 26 February included students Hamed Arab Choobdar and Taekyoung Jun, who impressed judges with an octopus-inspired ring.
Lecturer Claire Price received an award for her heart-shaped pendants, recognised as creative and distinctive jewellery that has the potential to be commercially viable.
Professor David Roberts, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media at Birmingham City University, added: “I was privileged and proud to attend the awards ceremony.
