Citizen Journalism
We are one of the leading research centres and have a proven track record in producing internationally excellent research in a number of diverse areas. Our current projects include 'Sorting, Translating and Disseminating Citizen Reporting in the Arab Region', work on hyper-local media in Britain and as part of a larger project on rethinking 'humanitarianism in a globalised digital age'.
Dr Dima Saber, who leads projects in citizen journalism in the Arab region, has a focus on the role of digital media in fostering social change and in altering the work of political activists in post-revolution countries such as Egypt, Tunisia and Syria. A lot of her recent work revolved around open educational resources (OER) and creative ways to enhance digital literacy in teaching, learning, and research. Her studies have embraced the historical analysis of key broadcast and press media along with the new media, and a strong commitment to media literacy and new technology in education.
Professor Tim Wall, who leads the research centre, takes a similar approach and uses insights from his historical studies to understand contemporary technological and cultural change. His recent projects have involved working with the BBC, arts organisations and community media activists.
