If you are interested in working in the global cosmetics industry and have an interest in the branding and promotion of beauty and cosmetics products and services then this course is for you. You will develop a range of practical business, creative and entrepreneurial skills and have the opportunity to research key and current trends in the beauty and cosmetics industry.
Your personal programme of study is supported by visits to appropriate cosmetics and beauty industry events or organisations and/or interviews of professionals involved in cosmetics or beauty services promotion.
On the course you will get involved in blogging, social media, website development, entrepreneurship and brand development.
You’ll be actively encouraged to take part in debates about the professional, educational, political and cultural implications of beauty and cosmetics in modern societies around the world.
You will also explore and use different research methods to investigate the branding and promotion of beauty services and cosmetics through marketing, advertising, events management, publicity or public relations.
By the end of the course you will have gained the ability to apply the knowledge, skills and methodologies of cosmetics branding and promotion to the analysis of complex cosmetics branding and promotion issues, and to the expression of sophisticated marketing, advertising concepts.
You will also have developed the ability to identify personal, career and practical goals related to cosmetics branding and promotion including work experience and entrepreneurship.

Your postgraduate personal statement is going to shine a light on your personal experience, academic success, personal skills and any other factors that will support your application for further study.
Here are the key areas you’ll need to address:
Studying a postgraduate course usually means you want to specialise in something. So what’s driving you?
Show that you’ve researched the course offering. What is it about this particular course that appeals to you? Is it the lecturers? The modules? Etc.
Tutors want to know that you can handle postgraduate study, so show them how your undergraduate experiences or work life has equipped you for a more advanced level of study. Key areas to address are research and group work but this can vary depending on your chosen course.
Add anything relevant that relates back to your chosen course and shows how your skills will contribute towards your learning. What extra-curricular activities have you taken part in? What awards have you won? What employment or voluntary experience do you have that has helped you develop transferable skills? How do these specifically relate to the course you are applying for?
You should also mention your future plans and how a postgraduate qualification fits in. Try to look beyond your postgraduate study – do you plan to jump straight into a specific career or follow your studies with a research degree? Lastly, use plain, professional English and, where possible, utilise the language of your chosen industry.

If you study this course part-time or via distance learning, you will be charged on a pro-rata basis. This means your fee will be calculated per module.
You will have access to Moodle, the University’s online interactive learning platform, University blogs, and an online forum to cultivate the postgraduate community within the School and to highlight professional opportunities for MA Fashion and Textiles students.

Each award is normally achieved within a 15 week study period (30 weeks for part-time students). Hence length of study for MA is 45 weeks and vacation (2 weeks).
Portfolio: Concepts and Treatments
The main portfolio module at PGCert stage focuses on the relationship between you and your work. You will create a diary that explores a broad area of practical and theoretical dimensions surrounding your programme of study, creating focus which will inform your development to Diploma stage.
The purpose of this module is to gain a deeper understanding of your programme of study and how it relates to the wider context within the world of fashion. This is supported by a range of tutorials, seminars, lectures and progress reviews.
You will use a mixture of primary and secondary research to create a clear, original presentation that is organised, coherent, well-executed and has a clear communication.
You will have one compulsory module:
The aim of this module is to encourage you to engage in the strategic planning and project management of work activities and studies relating to fashion cosmetics branding and promotion, personal development and career objectives.
You will complete a 3,000 word essay which outlines your research strategy.

Portfolio: Short Projects
This module encourages you to be proactive in the pursuit of gaining real industry experience or seeking out professional views on your work as well as vocational opportunities.
You will establish professional benchmarks, familiarity with and knowledge of professional figures, companies and activities.
Critical Issues in Fashion and Textiles
You will choose a research topic which is relevant to your area of interest and complete a 5,500 word written report with accompanying reflective, critical and contextual material.
You will undertake a sustained, in-depth and theoretically informed research project exploring an area that is of personal interest to you. This project will contribute to the acquisition of key BCU graduate attributes; creative problem solver, enterprising, professional and a work ready and global outlook.
Our course will equip you with the latest knowledge, skills and resources to help you investigate areas of personal and work-based interest.
You’ll develop your studies around your personal career ambitions and enjoy visits to industry events relevant to your interests . You can additionally arrange interviews with industry professionals working in cosmetics or beauty services promotion in the UK or globally.
As a graduate you’ll be able to apply your knowledge and practical skills to cosmetics branding and promotion, as well as sophisticated marketing and advertising concepts.
Your course will include a mixture of practical projects and written work. You will develop a portfolio of work that showcases your abilities and ideas and is executed and managed in a professional manner.
At each stage you will also write reflective reports that encourage you to develop a critical and contextual framework within which to understand your practice and future career choices. You are assessed using a mixture of tutorial reviews, project work submissions and oral exams.
You will be given opportunities to work alongside your peers in the wider Postgraduate Fashion and Textile community in order to create a fashion show. This annual ‘Vision for the Future’ fashion show is used as a fundraiser for charity. It is a collaborative project that relies entirely on student initiative within the course and beyond, and promotes peer tutoring and mentoring.
In addition to our focus upon you as cosmetics communicator, there are also opportunities for you to network with the professional world, and engage in external activities such as collaborating on projects that enhance the student experience and provide ‘real life’ experience.
The annual MA Fashion show, Vision for the Future, marked its fourth anniversary this year at BCU, flexing the talents of our Fashion Masters courses.
21 MA Fashion Design students showcased their collections, while MA Fashion Management, MA Fashion Promotion and MA Fashion Styling students took key roles in organising the spectacular event. Supporting Cancer Research UK, the show raised £430 for charity and gave students an experience of creative production on a live project.
MA Cosmetics Branding and Promotion connects you to contemporary roles and teaches you how to continue learning and developing your practice as a cosmetics media professional after completing your course. The MA also has a proven track record in enabling students to progress to doctoral level research.
Over the course we visit trade fairs and exhibitions in London. You will also have the opportunity to arrange your own trips to beauty, fashion, retail and cultural events and locations in Europe.
During the Diploma stage you are given the opportunity to visit Paris for the world’s premier fabric show, Premier Vision. The show offers up the season’s fashion directions some 18 months in advance, and is a useful tool to introduce you to all stages of the supply chain within which cosmetics branding and promotion sits.

You are encouraged, particularly during the PgDip and MA stages of the course, to seek external experiences and feedback from professionals and companies active in cosmetic branding and communication.
The outcomes of such work, if it fits your programme aims, may also be deemed to contribute to your course work.
Often students can arrange placements to begin immediately after they have finished the course. You are able to identify companies or places for work experience through the Research Skills module. The course team will also help you apply for, or prepare for, placements and work experiences.
