Birmingham City University (BCU) has achieved a first-class ranking in the People and Planet University League, which rates UK universities by environmental and ethical performance.

The University has placed 27th (First Class) in the 2023/24 league, which graded 151 UK universities by sustainability and ethics criteria. BCU is the top-scoring university in Birmingham, and fifth in the Midlands.

BCU scored highly in the areas of Environmental Policy, Auditing and Environmental Management System, and Carbon Reduction. While the league highlights BCU’s key environment and sustainability achievements, there is still more to be done in the areas of Ethical Investment, Ethical Careers and Carbon Management.

BCU’s Environmental Plan will push forward progress in 2024, with plans to announce the University’s Net Zero target dates and its first Biodiversity Action Plan.

The People & Planet University League is the largest student environmental campaign group in the UK, where universities are judged against multiple categories, from education and environmental policy to recycling waste and carbon management.

Institutions are ranked according to their scores in each area, before receiving an overall degree-style classification.
